Sugar is not your heart's enemy.

Ray Peat ("Sugar issues," 2006-2016) wrote ...

"Following the publication of [John] Yudkin's books [Pure, White and Deadly: The Problem with Sugar, etc.], and coinciding with increasing promotion of the health benefits of unsaturated vegetable oils, many people were converted to Yudkin's version of the lipid theory of heart disease, i.e., that the 'bad lipids' in the blood are the result of eating sugar. This has grown into essentially a cult, in which sugar is believed to act like an intoxicant, forcing people to eat until they become obese, and develop the 'metabolic syndrome,' and 'diabetes,' and the many problems that derive from that."

Re: Are beets high in nitrates easily converted into nitric oxide in the body?

Yes, No, Maybe.

Yes. Beets grown with synthetic fertilizers are high in nitrates.

No. Organic beets are low in nitrates.

Maybe. Beets grown with synthetic fertilizer can be cooked and dextrinized to neutralize these naughty nitrates.

SuperBeets? You must be joking!

L-arginine? Walk big circles around it.

Re: If nitric oxide is the heart's worst enemy, so beets are bad for heart health?

A beet is not a beet is not s beet.

An organic beet contains as much as 200 times less nitrogen (nitric oxide, nitrites, nitrates) as a non-organic beet.

Beets are like bulldogs, not knowing when to stop gorging.

Feed beets nitrogen fertilizer, and these nitrogen-hungry plants overindulge (especially when dining on ammonium sulfate).

They transform into SuperBeets, something we shouldn't be stuffing in our mouths.

Nitric oxide is the heart's worst enemy, not cholesterol ...

According to Ray Peat (2006-2016) ...

"The unsaturated fats and estrogen contribute to the increased release of serotonin and nitric oxide (NO). Nitric oxide is produced during inflammation, and, like ethane, can be detected in the breath when the lungs are inflamed. Nitric oxide, as a pro-inflammatory free radical, stimulates the peroxidation of the unsaturated fats. Both NO and serotonin inhibit mitochondrial respiration, shifting metabolism toward glycolysis.”
