“In brown bowel syndrome, there is brownish discoloration in the smooth muscle cells of muscularis propria at low magnification (hematoxylin and eosin stain). At higher magnification, the cytoplasmic pigment appears granular, light brown, and lipofuscin-like. No other abnormalities of the smooth muscle cells or muscularis propria are present.”
