When my mother was dying of cancer in the 1980s, I was so angry and distraught that I threw my St. Jude statue out the door, smashing it to pieces in the driveway.

Swami Nitty-Gritty phoned me, saying, “Don’t worry, brother, WE’RE looking after her … you know, me and … St. Jude.”

I had a good cry over that one!

"In the earliest days in the mountains, infection was rare. In the fresh mountain air and on the diet available, men recovered rapidly from serious wounds. Some of the Indian remedies were quite useful, but as we all know, many people simply recover. The mountain men, for example, and western men generally, were in excellent health to begin with.

"Few carried even a pound of excess weight. Most were constantly walking, running, bending, kneeling to set a trap, actively exercising. Their drinking binges were rare, as whiskey was available only in towns, and such bouts with the bottle were often separated by months or even years."

It actually takes no less than seven lab tests to tell for sure.

A dry cough (no mucus), dry cracked skin on the heels, and a red tongue are general indicators.
