On the grandfather clock appearing in all of the group photographs hanging on a wall inside the tomb, the time is 8:00. During the initiation ceremony, neophytes are introduced to VIII S.B.T. as ‘the time we meet.’ (Dinner begins earlier, at 6:30.) The purpose of the separate schedule is to promote the notion that Skull and Bones, within the tomb, is unaffected by the concept of time. Ensconced in long-ago traditions, unwilling to change, the society defies the sands of the hourglass by insisting that in Bones, I was told, ‘time stands still.’”
