Many of them were pre-Playboy girlie magazines. I had access to the swimming pool on Saturdays.

I started poolside reading Morton Thompson’s 1954 novel, Not As a Stranger, at the Magnolia, but was barely started when it fell in the pool. Otherwise, I read western and detective novels, e.g., Richard S. Prather’s Shell Scott novels.
